About Glamis Sand Dunes
The Glamis Sand Dunes are located in Imperial County California. They are a wonderful for off-road enthusiasts and campers. They have bathrooms (no running water), food trucks, part shops, and a convince store that are all easy to access. There are a ton of different things to do at Glamis Sand Dunes and different destinations to check out. A few of the different destinations I highly recommend checking out are: Sunset Point, Swing Set, Olds Mobile Hill, and the Sand Drags. You can use GPS/Google Maps to find most of these locations.
Sunset Point
Sunset Point in Glamis is located in the larger dunes behind Olds Mobile Hill. This is the perfect location to watch the sunset and spend time with friends and family. Don’t forget to take a photo of this picture perfect location.
Swing Set
Swing Set is my personal favorite location. There are a ton of ways to get there but GPS will guide you there from your location. This location has a volleyball net (don’t forget to bring the volleyball), swing set, tetherball, grill, and a good jump spot to enjoy while you relax and have some fun. This is a pretty busy location but going early in the morning gives you a good chance of having it to yourself for a little bit.
Olds Mobile Hill
Olds Mobile Hill is a large hill that people will take their off-road vehicle up and down. This is a great place to stop and take a break and watch the other vehicles going up and down.
Sand Drags
The sand drags are past Olds Mobile Hill but easy to access using the sand highway. This is a great spot to go in the evenings from 3pm to sunset to check out all the ATV’s racing. This spot can be dangerous and busy on holiday weekends. You want to make sure to always check your surrounds and pay attention to what is going on around you.
When to go to Glamis Sand Dunes
This can vary by person depending if you want a busier party like atmosphere or more cool, calm, and relaxed vibes. If you like to party and don’t mind large groups then a busy holiday weekend is for you! My favorite trip for a busy weekend is New Years Eve because at midnight you can watch hundreds of fireworks going off around you. It is an incredible view to see but be careful if you bring your animals as it can get loud with the fireworks booming. Another great busy holiday to go on is Thanksgiving and is always a wonderful time with all your friends and family plus you can always cook a chicken in the ground to make a more unique experience. If you want to check out a calmer weekend I recommend going earlier or later in the season and avoid any holiday weekend.
The beginning of the season starts in October with Halloween weekend being kinda the start of the season with a busy weekend. It is finally cool enough here to have a blast without over heating. The end of the season is the end of March right as it’s starting to warm up. Although we have gone in April it is usually pretty hot hitting around the 100’s.
What to bring to Glamis Sand Dunes
The Glamis Sand Dunes have bathrooms available but they can be messy or have no toilet paper, especially on a busy weekend. They typically have food trucks open to buy food from if you want to eat out while there. You will want to bring normal camping stuff, some off-road toys, food, and tons of water to stay hydrated. You will also need to purchase a Dunes pass it cost $35 for 7 days or $150 for a year pass. If you go during the hot season April 16th -September 30th, you won’t need to purchase a pass.
Our experience riding Glamis Sand Dunes
We have been riding out at Glamis for over 10 years now and have made so many amazing memories here. Although we love going on non-busy weekends we also go on a ton of busy weekends. We have gone for Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Years, President Day, and Valentines Day. It can still be pretty toasty out for Halloween weekend but if you have a camper with AC you won’t have to big of a problem, you will want to aim your rides for in the morning or evening. We always have a blast out there but definitely run into problems with toys breaking down almost every time. The nice part is you have Brawley and Yuma that are about an hour or less away to grab parts for as long as your handy.
